About the Author

gargoyle2 Matthew started training in Wado-Ryu karate in 1987 in the Midlands, under Eddie Cox. Moving first to University and then with work resulted in exposure to a wide variety of types and styles of Martial Arts, including Shotokan Karate, Aikido and Kickboxing.

On settling in Cumbria, Matthew joined Doug James Chojinkai organisation. An interest in practical applications for Traditional Karate was developed and strengthened by one-on-one training sessions with Iain Abernethy.

To support this interest, Matthew is also a member of the British Combat Association (BCA), run by Geoff Thompson and Peter Consterdine and has attended several of the Instructor's courses run by them. He continues to train and instruct at the Kendal club of the Chojinkai Organisation.

He currently holds the rank of Second Dan within both Chojinkai and the BCA.
